Unlike typical net pen designs, StormSafe is designed with six vertical, air-filled spars. Each spar houses three separate buoyancy chambers, with a network of air hoses connecting them to a manifold. With the flip of one valve, StormSafe can be safely lowered to any depth in under two minutes. The eighteen isolated air chambers make the cage exceptionally safe and easy to raise or lower in the water, with built-in redundancy to allow virtually no chance of sinking to the bottom. This quick submersibility allows workers to lower the cage out of harm's way during seasons of moving ice or high winds, and eliminates the possibility of operator error. When it's time to raise the cage again, fresh air is supplied to the spars by a regular air compressor, and the flipping of the same valve. Enough air can be added to raise the 15 metre tall cage as much as halfway out of the water for cleaning of the nets and towing.
